Il était deux fois: la fiction et son double

Abstract : Tanguy Viel's novels seem at first glance to be about just telling a story. Still, although to varying degrees, their narration always includes a reflexive dimension. For his novels are built from a complex cultural foundation, and this clever mix of influences and original variations is constantly both claimed and questioned. Here, we propose to study from this perspective two emblematic works of this device: Cinema and La Disparition de Jim Sullivan. Both are built on the principle of a story within a story, thus generating multiple mirror-like effects. This paper aims to study four fundamental aspects of this narrative arrangement: the dialogue with the literary and artistic space, the revisited functions of the narrator, the redefinition of the novelistic mimesis, and finally the projection mechanisms at work.
